UNITED SIKHS Health Fair a Grand Success!

Richmond Hill, NY: Over 50 providers from 11 agencies came together on September 30, 2012 at Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society to provide essential health services to the community. The fair attracted over 200 people who accessed services such as Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose, Cholesterol, BMI, Stroke awareness information, Mental Health Screening, Oral health screenings, and Insurance information. Participants could also participate in ongoing research studies or apply to participate in ongoing diabetes prevention program through Project RICE.

The health fair was organized with two major goals in mind: to provide services in language to a community that is most in need; and second, to promote awareness of a proactive approach to self-care, instead of reactive. The health fair continues to highlight the susceptibility we have as a community to chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiac disease. It is our hope that regular screenings and early warnings will promote a culture of preventive action, and will motivate community members to engage in healthy behaviors.
