SWAN (Someone With A Need) Students

The situation

Every year, thousands of international students apply to study in the UK – a country known for its high educational standards which students hope will lead to a good job either here or in their country of origin.  In the 2009-10 academic year, the number applying for a student visa has rapidly increased, and many students arrive having been told by agents, who help them get their visa, that they will be able to find work in the UK to help them pay their fees and contribute towards living costs.  However, the recession in the UK has lead to a lack of jobs, leaving many students without avenues of financial support on which they were depending.  This has led to many students struggling to pay their rent, living in difficult conditions, with little awareness of what could help them improve their situation.

What is being done

UNITED SIKHS is working to enhance existing help available to the students, such as langgar (free community meals) from the Gurdwaras. UNITED SIKHS volunteers are manning help desks to collate information from the students and signpost them to services from which they may benefit.

We are also producing a DVD which aims to highlight the current situation to those in Punjab, with the intention of reducing the numbers of students who arrive unprepared, or who may have better options in their country of origin.

Alongside this, we aim to link up people who may have small jobs which need doing, with students capable of carrying out these jobs.  This latter aim is, however, dependent on more volunteers committing to help us.

What you can do to help?

Donate funds to UNITED SIKHS by going to www.unitedsikhs.org/donateThis money will be used for emergency aid ( emergency first aid, winter clothes, bedding), as well as supporting our efforts to raise awareness of the hardships facing students to those still in Punjab;

Volunteer (by going to www.unitedsikhs.org/join) at the help desk which will initially be at:

Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha

Park Avenue

Southall

The helpdesk will be open on Tuesdays in the meeting room from 10.00 a.m. till 1 p.m. (please feel free to volunteer for any duration of this time).  It will confidentially record student information to understand their needs, and signpost students to existing services which they may need, such as accommodation services, job seekers, health services etc.  Prior training will be provided to volunteers.

To volunteer, please go to www.unitedsikhs.org/join and complete a volunteer form.

Raise awareness of the current situation which students face to relatives and friends overseas who may be planning to work or study in the UK, so that they may find better solutions in their own country or be better prepared when arriving in the UK.
