Keys, Florida: The residents are returning to their communities and are opening their doors to opportunities to heal and restore, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Amidst the rubble and receding waters, there is hope in rebuilding, yet.
UNITED SIKHS’ disaster relief team has been hard at work doing whatever is necessary to help communities in Florida get back on their feet following the most devastating hurricane season in decades. The relief team has been especially focused to assist places that are often ignored by national agencies and are the last to receive any help.
“UNITED SIKHS is the first organization that has come to us to help. God bless you and your community members who are here to help,” said Laura, the principal of the National School of Excellence in the Keys Area. “After non-residents were finally permitted into the Keys, UNITED SIKHS was the first to meet the residents and help them begin rebuilding”. Volunteers, some of whom have left their jobs and homes to help, buying emergency supplies.
Throughout the past two weeks, truckloads of emergency supplies have been delivered to areas like the Keys and parts of Miami. Additionally, volunteers have been active in maintaining continuous langar (open, community meals), feeding hundreds every day. Furthermore, UNITED SIKHS have been able to reach particularly hard-hit immigrant communities by partnering with local distribution centers to coordinate supplies. These collaborative efforts have been recognized by local community and business leaders.
Volunteers are setting up the tent in . Key west mile marker 10 for langar services. Thank you to all of our volunteers who have guided, assisted, and praying for the well-being of those impacted. We had the privilege of bringing a truckload of emergency supplies to the Baptist Church in Key West and got this message of appreciation which we wanted to share. We can only engage in #HurricaneIrma Relief because of your support. View the video here

Following the hurricane, many communities are at increased risk for food shortages. Families have lost their livelihood as well as their homes. UNITED SIKHS is gearing up to feed 500+ people per day. In order for langar services to run smoothly, many supplies are still needed: rice, beans, tomato sauce, pasta, ginger and garlic paste, fruits, onions, salt, tumeric, carrots, sugar, frozen mixed vegetables, potatoes, carrots, cumin seeds, garam masala, tea, gram flour, coriander powder.
