The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges that required innovative solutions. UNITED SIKHS rose to the occasion by developing programs that addressed emerging community needs and expanded its humanitarian efforts during a time of uncertainty.

One of the most significant challenges was the transition to online education, particularly for children in K–12 schools. Lockdowns across the United States resulted in the closure of in-person classrooms, leaving many students without the academic support they had previously received from teachers, parents, and school-based programs. As a result, many children struggled to keep up with their studies.

To help bridge this gap, UNITED SIKHS launched several educational initiatives, including the Homework Help Club and the Cyber Security Crash Course.

Originally designed as an in-person program, the Homework Help Club was successfully adapted to an online format to continue serving students throughout the pandemic. The program supported children from lower socio-economic backgrounds by providing academic assistance with homework and school assignments. Many participating students lacked access to additional educational support at home or through their schools, making the program an important resource during this period. As educational disparities increased during the pandemic, enrollment in the program also grew.

UNITED SIKHS also introduced the Cyber Security Crash Course, a selective online program that taught young people the fundamentals of cybersecurity and digital strategy. The course was delivered by South Asian cybersecurity professionals from across the United States. Although the program had originally been planned as an in-person initiative, it was successfully transitioned to an online format following the onset of the pandemic. The pilot program was launched in Orange County, California, with twenty enrolled students. Following its success, plans were developed to expand the program to additional counties across California and eventually to communities nationwide.

In addition, UNITED SIKHS developed the Khalsa Tutoring Program, a tutoring initiative designed to support students who could not afford or access high-quality educational assistance. The program was initially planned to focus on foundational subjects such as early mathematics and reading, with long-term plans to expand into Calculus, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, SAT preparation, and Advanced Placement (AP) subjects. The vision for the program was to establish a long-term educational resource that would remain accessible to learners of all ages and backgrounds.

These initiatives demonstrated UNITED SIKHS’ commitment to reducing educational barriers and supporting underserved communities during one of the most challenging periods in recent history. Through the support of volunteers, educators, and community members, these programs helped ensure that students continued to receive meaningful educational opportunities despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic.
