Hurricane Helene Relief Work Continues In Asheville Amid Recovery

UNITED SIKHS continues relief operations in Western North Carolina. The team’s work over the weekend at Asheville, Spruce Pine and Minneapolis, NC provides essential support to those severely impacted by Hurricane Helene, showcasing the strength and solidarity with the communities.

The experience was both heartwarming and inspirational.  The community of the Carolinas came together to do grass roots level sewa while partnering with local churches, FEMA and fire departments in an outreach to those impacted.

“Being able to listen to people directly impacted by the flood, touching their lives, and receiving blessings back from them was priceless”, said Pawanjit Singh, who helped coordinate the response. The collaboration with local partners amplified our efforts, allowing us to make a more significant impact in the affected areas.

Our team reached out to rural communities and gave direct assistance to individuals affected by the hurricane including children. We distributed hot meals, water, propane tanks, heaters, medicines, charcoal, dehumidifiers and other basic necessities, ensuring that those most in need received timely support.

The relief mission highlighted the resilience and generosity of our volunteers and partners. By directly engaging with those impacted by the flood, our team not only provided immediate relief but also offered hope and comfort during these challenging times.

UNITED SIKHS Director Balwant Singh expressed gratitude to the team in the Carolinas for the support and warm welcome, stating that “as we continue towards Milton, our work here is not done yet. We look forward to creating a team in different areas of Carolinas and request anyone to contact us directly for additional on-going work. Our volunteers like yourselves are the real heroes.”

UNITED SIKHS is thankful to the management of Gurdwara Sahib Charlotte, Gurdwara Sahib Khalsa Darbar Charlotte, Gurdwara Nanak Darbar Spartanburg, and Sikh Gurdwara of NC Durham for their support in making this mission possible. UNITED SIKHS is also thankful to Vicky Singh and Sandeep Singh from Mela Restaurant in Asheville and Aroma restaurant in Hendersonville for allowing us to use their facility and logistics for preparing hot meals and for the accommodations. Despite the hardship faced by their restaurant and thousands of other business owners across Western NC, being the first to respond with thousands of hot meals for those in need.

We are also thankful to the volunteers Akash Bhatia, Lakhbir Singh, Jasmeet Kaur, Randeep Singh, Simran Puneet Singh, Sahib Preet Singh, Bhejpal Singh, Onkar Singh, Sandeep Singh, Dharampal Singh, Harpal Singh, Pawanjit Singh, Tarunpreet Kaur, Vicky Singh, Moninder Singh, Jagnoor Singh and to our youth volunteers Ansh Inderjit Singh, Ekjyoth Singh, Pavit Jot Singh and Rameet Singh for the amazing impact made to those whose needs are most dire.
