This Gurpurab (celebration of the Guru’s birth anniversary), we are reminded of a beautiful Sakhi (story) that exemplifies Guru Nanak Sahib’s teachings on compassion and generosity.
Guru Nanak Sahib once demonstrated to Bhai Mardana the true essence of compassion. In this story, the elder brother secretly added grains from his own heap to that of his younger brother, thinking the latter needed it more to provide for his large family. Meanwhile, the younger brother, thinking of the elder’s future, added grains to his brother’s heap, believing the elder, childless, would need more support in his old age. Through this story, Guru Nanak Sahib emphasized the values of empathy and selflessness, showing that compassion is the root of true faith. He teaches that Daya (compassion) precedes Dharam (faith), underscoring that spirituality and morality stem from empathy.
Guru Sahib’s teachings urge us to serve and uplift the underprivileged. His teachings call upon us to earn an honest living, meditate on the Divine, and see the light of the Almighty in all, transcending differences of race, gender, caste or status. He raised his voice against injustice, confronting rulers and defending the weak and vulnerable when their rights were trampled.
Through langar (community kitchen), Guru Nanak established a tradition of selfless service, feeding those in need and fostering equality across social and religious divides.
On the 555th Gurpurab of Dhan (Respected) Guru Nanak Sahib, we endeavor to walk the path he showed. UNITED SIKHS, as an affiliate of the United Nations, remains steadfast in promoting these timeless values—compassion, justice, and equality—dedicated to serving humanity without prejudice.
“Within the mind are gems, jewels, and rubies; if you listen and imbibe Gur’s Teachings, even once.”
