UNITED SIKHS calls for accountability for 22-year-old Sikh targeted in alleged hate incident in Australia
Melbourne, Australia | April 15, 2026
UNITED SIKHS has called for accountability following an alleged hate-motivated incident victimizing a 22-year-old Sikh man, Harmanpreet Singh, in Victoria, Australia, raising serious concerns about the safety and protection of visibly identifiable communities.
UNITED SIKHS formally raised the matter with the Government of Victoria, highlighting the impact of the incident not only on the individual involved but also on the broader Sikh community. In response, the Office of the Premier acknowledged the concern and the distress caused, reiterating that no individual should feel unsafe or targeted due to their identity, beliefs, or appearance.
While welcoming this acknowledgment, UNITED SIKHS emphasized that recognition must be accompanied by clear, consistent, and transparent action.

The organization noted that incidents targeting individuals based on visible identity markers, such as the Sikh turban, have a wider impact on community confidence and sense of belonging.

The Premier’s response indicated that the matter has been shared with the Minister for Police and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, and referenced the independence of Victoria Police in handling individual cases, along with the state’s broader commitment to strengthening anti-vilification protections.
UNITED SIKHS reiterated that while legal frameworks and policy commitments are essential, their effectiveness depends on timely enforcement, transparency, and accountability at the ground level.
The organization has been actively engaging with the affected individual and relevant authorities to ensure that concerns are formally documented and addressed, while continuing to advocate for stronger protections and institutional responsiveness.

UNITED SIKHS will continue to monitor developments in this matter and engage with authorities to ensure that outcomes uphold the principles of justice, dignity, and equal protection for all individuals.
