Sikh Summit Spotlight: Damandeep Kaur Gill – Bridging Law, Health and Arts
At the intersection of law, public health, and the arts stands Damandeep Kaur Gill, an undergraduate at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor whose journey embodies the spirit of multidisciplinary leadership. Pursuing dual degrees in International Studies (Global Environment & Health) and Public Health (Community & Global Public Health), alongside a Music minor in Vocal Performance, Damandeep is redefining what it means to be a student advocate in today’s world.

Her leadership extended to planning and executing the annual Sikh Summit, where she coordinated with legislators, attorneys, advocacy leaders, and community organizers. These experiences gave her exposure to critical conversations on civil rights and representation, including discussions with state and federal leaders connected to agencies such as the DOJ and FBI.
This year, we invite you to join the 2026 Sikh Summit & AHAA, where leaders like Damandeep continue shaping conversations on justice, health, and representation.

As Michigan Chapter Lead, Damandeep also supported the chapter’s growth through volunteer organization, outreach, and internal coordination, honing her teamwork, leadership, and adaptability in fast-paced advocacy environments. These experiences deepened her commitment to community-centered work, emphasizing the importance of listening, learning, and building relationships in advocacy spaces.
A recipient of the FLAS Fellowship, Damandeep has pursued South Asian language study despite funding cuts. Today, she speaks five languages, a skill she views not just as academic achievement but as a powerful tool for connection and advocacy. Looking ahead, she envisions her multilingualism as central to her future JD/PhD journey, focusing on the international implementation of public health initiatives in Punjab.
Damandeep’s academic contributions extend to global health research. She is a co-author on a project addressing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) among women in Ghana, combining qualitative data with interdisciplinary analysis from engineers and physicians. Her work reflects a broader commitment to health equity and reproductive rights, themes that also inspired her to found Wayne for Women, an initiative tackling maternal and infant health disparities in Michigan and beyond.

Her passion for reproductive health will soon take her abroad: to Ireland, where she will study global perspectives on reproductive rights, and to Peru, where she will join a service trip focused on education, sustainability, and rural community support.
Beyond advocacy and research, Damandeep embraces the arts and entrepreneurship. As Social Chair of the University of Michigan Women’s Glee Club, she launched the group’s first Big/Little mentorship program and spearheaded outreach initiatives to strengthen community ties.
Her entrepreneurial spirit shines through her role in establishing the founding chapter of Rho Epsilon Iota, the nation’s first real estate fraternity, where she competed in national strategy competitions and explored innovation in financial literacy. For Damandeep, growth comes from embracing multiple disciplines at once—whether through music, mentorship, business, or advocacy.

Damandeep’s story is one of intersections, between cultures, disciplines, and lived experiences. Whether conducting research, mentoring students, or leading advocacy campaigns, she demonstrates that success does not fit into one category or identity.
Her vision is clear: to continue building bridges across communities and disciplines, carrying forward the values of service, justice, and empowerment.
