REMEMBERING 1984: A CALL FOR JUSTICE AMID ONGOING HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS
The haunting echoes of June 1984 remain etched in the memory of Sikhs worldwide – a painful chapter of history marked by grave human rights abuses and injustices. As another year passes by since the 1984 Sikh Genocide, we must reaffirm our commitment to justice, accountability, and the fundamental human rights that were so brutally violated 42 years ago.

Operation Bluestar and the subsequent anti-Sikh violence stand as stark reminders of state-sanctioned violence, forced disappearances, extra-judicial killings, and the suppression of religious freedoms. Thousands of Sikhs lost their lives, families were shattered, and the scars of the dark period remain unhealed till this date. Survivors and activists continue to demand accountability and due process against those responsible, yet justice has remained elusive.
The failure of successive governments in India, along with investigative and prosecutorial authorities, to hold those responsible accountable has not only prolonged the suffering of Sikh victims, their families and the worldwide Sikh community. It has also reinforced an ongoing culture of impunity despite decades of call for justice. Sikh organizations, including UNITED SIKHS, a UNITED NATIONS affiliated civil society partner, and others across the global diaspora, have engaged for decades in advocacy efforts through international human rights mechanisms, national parliaments, and civil society organizations to seek recognition, independent investigations, and accountability for the 1984 events.
The global Sikh Community, human rights organizations, and global advocates continue to call upon the Government of India, United Nations human rights mechanisms, and other relevant international accountability bodies, for independent investigations, recognition of the events as genocide, and reparations for the affected families.

Beyond remembrance, this annual commemoration must serve as a rallying point for global action against human rights violations all across the world. Governments, international bodies, and civil society must stand against systematic oppression and advocate for policies that safeguard religious freedom, dignity, and justice for marginalized communities worldwide.

As Sikhs gather to honor the victims of 1984, we must transform grief into determination – strengthening our efforts toward justice, equality, and the protection of human rights for all. The wounds of 1984 demand healing, and that healing can only come through truth, accountability, and an unwavering pursuit of justice.
The world can not forget Operation Blue Star, the military operation of June 1984 in Amritsar, India, when Sikh civilians were killed by Indian state security forces in and around the Golden Temple complex. Recognition of the widespread, state enabled, anti-Sikh violence and persecution across parts of India, that resulted in significant loss of Sikh lives, destruction of sacred Sikh religious and cultural property, and long-term trauma for the Sikh people, are all supported by undeniable and credible allegations that India’s state actors enabled or failed to prevent this atrocious violence against innocent people. The international community must remain committed to truth, accountability, and the prevention of such human rights violations, ensuring that such events are never repeated.
