On 30th January we launched our Legal Helpline for persons who went missing after the Tractor Rally in New Delhi. Since then, our legal team has been inundated with calls and emails.  In January 2021, based on the feedback on the ground, over 250 people were missing, including 125 who have been arrested, stated Harpreet Kaur, a UNITED SIKHS legal advocate in India.
“UNITED SIKHS’ legal wing has partnered with more than 30 advocates who are actively working with the families and friends of the missing individuals,” she stated.  Our International Civil & Human Rights Advocacy (ICHRA) team is headed by the High Court & Supreme court Advocates.  We are working alongside Kisan (Farmer) Unions and DSGMC (Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee) and other community lawyers in India to make sure every farmer gets legal aid and representation as well as ensure their safety and access to medical aid and basic necessities.

In most of the cases, the individuals have been charged with rioting, unlawful assemblies, use of criminal force, and a few for attempted murder. Our legal team has been investigating the copies of FIRs (First Information Reports) filed in order to start the process of getting bail for the people being arrested. In some cases, copies of FIRs are not uploaded online, for which our on-ground team of volunteers is pooling all their resources together to physically obtain the documents and make the process smoother and faster.

The legal team is developing steps to provide legal assistance in lower and higher courts to present a legal defense for farmers in need free of charge. We are also obtaining investigative services to respond to requests from families of missing farmers and providing any legal assistance to ensure we address human and civil concerns.

Relief Aid For Farmers

Our relief team is also providing medical aid to the protestors who were brutally beaten by the police during the tractor rally. Two young protestors were immediately admitted to St. Stephen’s hospital. Our ground team continues to provide medical aid to the farmers at Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur Border.
