UNITED SIKHS and New York City officials, U.S. Census Bureau representatives and community leaders attended the Richmond Hill Census “Pop Up” Caravan organized by Census Deputy Director Amit Singh Bagga at Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Sikh Center on Sunday in the latest push to assist all members of the Sikh community to complete the 2020 Census.
The Caravan’s purpose was to provide Census assistance through these pop-up Census Assistance Centers to the Punjabi and Indo-Caribbean communities.
According to the NYC Mayor’s Office, NYC Census 2020 is a first-of-its-kind organizing initiative established by Mayor de Blasio in January 2019 to ensure a complete and accurate count of all New Yorkers in the 2020 Census.
As the Census response has just reached over 50%, with only a few days left to the September 30th deadline, the reason to organize such an event was obvious! TO RAISE AWARENESS among New Yorkers about the importance of participating.
“If we want our schooling to be better, if we want infrastructure to be better, if we want better housing then we should better go ahead and fill the 2020 Census forms because it is very important! If we want to be heard then we need to make that noise so that people can hear us,” said Sarabjit Kaur of UNITED SIKHS.
