Farmers continue to show their agitation towards the contentious provisions of the new farm laws. In spite of facing countless difficulties while protesting, farmers choose not to stop until the laws are totally repealed.
More than 5 farmers have already lost their lives to this protest fighting for their rights. The new Farm laws are not new to the farmers distress, in fact the farmers of India have been in a state of depression due to bankruptcies and debts which makes India to have the highest suicide rates in the world. According to the National Crime Records Bureau’s accidental deaths and suicides in India, 10,281 farmers died by suicide in 2019. This Translates into 856 suicides every month and 28 deaths every day. The state of Punjab has worsened as over the last five years as farmer’s suicides in Punjab increased by more than 12 times, according to government data.
“Farmers in India are committing suicides, their debts are increasing, they can barely meet both ends, amidst all this, The laws which Indian government has formed, will only worsen the condition of farmers both mentally and physically. If the govt can not do anything for the betterment of farmers, it should at least take these laws down. This movement has now spread all over India and Farmers from many states are now taking part in this protest and many countries are also pressuring the govt, protests are being held the world over,” Sukhwinder Singh, Director, UNITED SIKHS.
