UNITED SIKHS condemns dastardly attack on Sikh community leader Amit Pal Singh.

July 27, 2020

Over the past few decades instances of bullying, violence and hate crimes have been commonplace for Sikhs across the United States. The community because of its visible identity has had to face routine injustice and has been targeted for their distinct appearance. These instances have especially been prevalent recently due to the racial animus and economic uncertainty which has gripped the nation.

In a recent incident, a Sikh community leader Mr. Amit Pal Singh, chairman of the Sikh Society of Central Florida was a victim of hate language sprayed across his car on July 25, 2020.  Alarmingly, he was targeted at his home as assailants vandalized his personal vehicle with a racist message in an effort to intimidate and ostracize him. UNITED SIKHS stands firmly with and is representing Mr. Singh to ensure that justice prevails.

Mr. Singh is well known among the Orlando Sikh community and has been active in philanthropic work in and around the state. He has been integral in developmental projects, immersion programs with schools and is active in organizing fundraisers for pantries to assist schools impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We need to keep on our path of helping even just one person, if we all help just one person, everyone can be helped” – Mr. Amit Pal Singh

Mr. Singh, for years has propagated a major tenet of Sikhism which is to engage in sewa or selfless service. This means to help and aid all in need, regardless of their faith, background, class or creed. In the aftermath of the deadly Pulse shooting in Orlando in 2016, which took 49 innocent lives, he organized a vigil in support of the victims along with 150 participants from the Sikh Community.

It is shocking that in a community where his work has been widely appreciated by major news publications such as the Orlando Sentinel and the New York Times that he has been targeted and singled out because of his faith. This underscores the need to continue to work and amplify the Sikh identity amongst our neighbors as it is painfully evident that there are many who are ignorant and unaware.

UNITED SIKHS condemns this assault and we urge law enforcement agencies to take swift and direct action against all perpetrators. We are monitoring the situation and are in constant communication with the FBI, the local police department, DOJ and all relevant authorities.

UNITED SIKHS has always raised its voice against any form of xenophobia, racism and hate. Our objective is to spread awareness, understanding and provide resources to those in need. Instances such as these only strengthen our resolve and further cement the importance of our work. We encourage everyone to practice their faith fearlessly. If you or anyone you know has experienced hate, discrimination or bullying do not hesitate to reach out to our team at law@unitedsikhs.org.
