North Carolina, USA- As TSA celebrated Diversity Day in October, UNITED SIKHS in partnership with Charlotte Sikh community attended this event for the 3rd consecutive year to help create awareness to protect the SIkh Identity. Sangat from Raleigh joined this annual event too.

Awareness event at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was on Oct 24th and Raleigh Durham International Airport on Oct 19th. Survey conducted at CLT airport revealed TSA screeners were better equipped to handle Sikhs traveling through this airport. As a result, a dramatic improvement in passenger experience was found without compromising security protocol. Terry Stanton, Head of Airport Screening Charlotte, was very supportive of our efforts and offered to have volunteers participate in the training programs. Bhupinder Singh, who coordinated the effort at the Raleigh airport said, “ I am impressed with the feedback and support received from the agents. We need to now emulate this program in other cities across the United States as well ”. Sikh articles of faith have become more recognizable and understood as a direct result of such continued interactions.

As we approach the end of 2012, we reflect on all the challenges our community has faced in light of mistaken identity. This makes our desire to create awareness and fight for our rights even stronger.

We humbly seek your support to help us work on this project and take it to a national level.
