UNITED SIKHS Continues to Stand Against Racial Discrimination
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, held annually every 21st day of March. This day was established to honor the memory of the 69 individuals who lost their lives during the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa in 1960. This tragic event, where peaceful demonstrators protesting apartheid’s “pass laws” were met with violence, became a turning point in the global fight against racial injustice. The day now serves as a call to action for individuals, organizations, and governments to address the systemic and structural inequalities that perpetuate racism.
UNITED SIKHS joins the international community in commemorating this day and reaffirms its dedication to combating racism and fostering inclusivity.
This year’s observance is particularly significant as it marks six decades since the adoption of the Convention. In its most recent Resolution, the General Assembly made a global call for concrete action for the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance and the comprehensive implementation of and follow-up to The Durban Declaration and Programme of Action – the UN’s blueprint to combat racism globally.
The Declaration also recognizes the right of non-governmental organizations like the UNITED SIKHS, “to function freely and openly within their societies and thereby make an effective contribution to the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance throughout the world, and to promote a wider role for grass-roots organizations.”
UNITED SIKHS’ Role in Combating Racial Discrimination

We urge governments to ratify and implement the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and to adopt policies that address systemic inequalities.
UNITED SIKHS remains steadfast in its commitment to this cause, working tirelessly to promote equality, justice, and human rights for all.
