Baton Rouge, LA: In response to the immediate demand of Doctors and health care professional made by FEMA last week, a UNITED SIKHS medical team arrived here last week from Chicago and Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Sagina Kaur and Dr. Baljinder Singh of Chicago, visited shelter homes in Donaldsonville, Napoleonville and Baton Rouge area. They found out that most of the evacuees did not have medical insurance but needed medical assistance.
Dr Darshan Singh, and Dr Simran Kaur along with other doctors visited several shelters home, where UNITED SIKHS has been serving hot meals, to provide short-term medical assistance. Basic medical supplies and other health care products were provided to shelter homes.
“UNITED SIKHS will continue to provide medical assistance to the affected areas by sending medical teams and medical supplies to shelter homes in Louisiana” said Dr. Baljinder Singh.
In an effort to bring smiles on the face of children in shelter home UNITED SIKHS organized a picnic party for 100 evacuees last Sunday at the Allen Chapel shelter home. “It was very much needed to have a picnic party outside the shelter home where all adults, kids and volunteer can have little fun leaving two weeks of depression behind” said UNITED SIKHS volunteer Tej Singh Kaur from Palo Alto, California.
“With Waheguru’s grace I was able to come and serve humanity. My Khalsa spirit is uplifted in the ecstasy of chardikala” said Deva Singh Khalsa, Espanola, NM, who led a 7 member volunteer team for the UNITED SIKHS GHANAIA Katrina relief efforts.
Hari Bhajan Kaur, Nirmal Singh, Prabhu Singh Khalsa along with other volunteers helped relocate school furniture and books from Near Orleans to Lafayette. A School teacher was worried about the school which closed after Katrina hit the city. She expects to start classes in a church in Lafayette.
