Dear Supporters,
Hurricane Ida which made landfall in Louisiana on August 29th has left a trail of destruction across many states stretching into the northeast. Thousands have been left homeless as basic infrastructure crumbled with no electricity, no water and no gas. Recovery efforts are underway with local, state and federal agencies all coordinating relief efforts.
The Hurricane has left dozens dead and more than 1 million without power.
The local authorities in New Orleans have approached UNITED SIKHS to provide the residents with basic needs to survive. UNITED SIKHS has set up a command center at Sikh Gurdwara Sahib New Orleans to provide emergency assistance to displaced residents who cannot return home given the scale of the disaster.
Leadership teams and volunteers have arrived from Seattle, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and New Jersey to team up with New Orleans based volunteers in coordinating the operations at the command center. The first relief services are focused on providing food and drinking water. These supplies are needed to meet the basic life sustaining needs of residents in shelters and many who do not have a roof over their heads. We are also going to be providing basic personal and hygiene supplies to displaced residents.
Multiple distribution points have been set up for providing relief services in New Orleans. Our teams are committed to working with local authorities and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to offer all needed assistance as we collectively bring some semblance of relief to the residents of New Orleans.
Please join these life affirming efforts by volunteering your time, providing supplies or with financial contributions. Every action you take makes a big difference in the lives of fellow citizens who literally have had the roof taken off over their heads. We cannot do this humanitarian work without your unyielding assistance and support.
