In another historic first for 2021, the United States House of Representatives voted to impeach former President Trump for a second time. No prior United States president has ever been impeached twice and not within one term. The vote was also historic in that it was the most bipartisan impeachment, with 10 Republican representatives joining the Democratic representatives for a total of 232 votes for impeachment.
The House of Representatives presented its articles of impeachment to the Senate yesterday, January 25, 2021. In order to impose consequences upon former president Trump, two-thirds of the Senate (67 senators) must vote to convict.
The Senate’s current composition is evenly split with 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. Given the highly partisan nature of impeachment, assuming the Democrats vote unitedly, they will need 17 Republicans to join them in order to convict former president Trump. The trial is scheduled to begin on February 9, 2021.
