Dear Supporters,
Many of you by now have seen news coverage of Farmers in India’s northwest states especially Punjab, known as the bread basket of the nation; marching peacefully for protecting the rights to farming their land, essentially their livelihood. Punjab farmers have taken the lead in this campaign inspiring farmers across the country for having their voice for justice heard in Delhi with the Central Government.
Farmers are protesting recent laws enacted by the Central Government fearing:
- Dismantling of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system which will allow big corporate houses to dictate terms and farmers will end up getting less for their crops.
- Disbanding of the Mandi system, they will not get an assured price for their crops
- Undoing of “Arthiyas” – commission agents who also pitch in with loans for them – will be out of business.
These protests have been markedly Peaceful yet at times police forces have used violence against their basic democratic right to be heard.
Hundreds of farmers have been injured due to police violence.
“With the prevalence of COVID-19 pandemic, there is an insurmountable potential risk to farmers and their families. Addressing their concerns is extremely urgent and the government owes this responsibility of care to its citizens” – Jagdeep Singh, Executive Director, UNITED SIKHS
