UNITED SIKHS commends NYPD for Arrest in  Amarjit Singh Assault case

UNITED SIKHS extends our deep gratitude to the New York City Police Department  (NYPD) for their efforts in identifying and arresting the assailant involved in an assault  against  Sikh taxi driver Amarjit Singh. The swift action by the NYPD in ensuring justice and protecting New Yorkers is commendable. The NYPD informed UNITED SIKHS yesterday of the arrest of the suspect and we appreciate their dedication to holding the perpetrator accountable.

UNITED SIKHS firmly denounces the brutal assault on Amarjeet Singh, which took place last month on the Van Wyck Expressway. The victim, who has been a cab driver for 16 years, was left with bruises and a damaged car after the suspect called him  a terrorist and threatened to kill him. No one should ever be subjected to such violence while working hard to support themselves and their family.

Unfortunately, this attack is not an isolated incident. Sikhs in New York and across the United States have long faced discrimination, hate crimes, and bias-based violence. Studies show that Sikh individuals are disproportionately targeted due to their distinct identity, including their turbans and beards. Sikh youth have reportedly experienced verbal and physical assaults in schools, and Sikh professionals continue to face workplace discrimination and racial profiling.

Hate crimes against Sikhs have included assaults, vandalism, and even fatal attacks, with perpetrators often mistaking the Sikh identity. These incidents highlight the urgent need for stronger protections, awareness, and advocacy to ensure that Sikh Americans can live without fear of violence or discrimination.

To our Sikh brothers and sisters in New York, UNITED SIKHS is here for you. If you or someone you know has been affected by violence, discrimination, or injustice, we stand ready to offer assistance, legal support, and advocacy.

Let us continue to stand together against hate, support one another, and work toward a safer, more inclusive society.
