On November 18th, the global community observes the World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence. This significant day, established by the United Nations, aims to raise awareness and take action against the grave violations of children’s rights that occur in all corners of the world.
Child sexual exploitation, abuse, and violence remain pervasive issues that affect millions of children worldwide. These heinous acts inflict severe trauma on young lives, often leading to long-term psychological, emotional, and physical harm. The prevention and healing from such atrocities require a concerted effort from governments, organizations, communities, and individuals.
UNITED SIKHS stands in solidarity with the United Nations and all organizations dedicated to protecting children from sexual exploitation, abuse, and violence. Our mission to serve humanity without discrimination compels us to advocate for the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable members of society—our children.
India faces significant challenges in combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. For instance, the 2013 Muzaffarpur shelter home case exposed systemic abuse and trafficking of minors. Additionally, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while a critical piece of legislation, has seen delays in prosecutions due to the overburdened nature of courts and stigmatization of reporting child abuse. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated vulnerabilities, with a notable increase in online sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
Similarly, the Philippines has been identified as a global hotspot for child sexual exploitation and abuse. The country has seen a significant rise in online sexual exploitation during the COVID-19 pandemic, with children being particularly vulnerable to such crimes. Efforts to combat this issue include various initiatives by local and international organizations, but the problem remains pervasive.
Through a range of services, UNITED SIKHS provides initiatives aimed at preventing child sexual exploitation and abuse and supporting survivors in their journey to healing. These efforts include Community Education and Awareness campaign, Legal Assistance via ICHRA, the legal advocacy program of the organization, Counseling and psychological assistance to help survivors heal from trauma, and policy advocacy.
On this World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence, UNITED SIKHS calls on everyone to take a stand, and work together to create safe environments for our children, where they can grow and thrive without fear of exploitation or abuse. It is our collective responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of every child.
