UNITED SIKHS: Join Our Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts
As Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across the southeastern United States, UNITED SIKHS, activated volunteers to mobilize resources as part of its Sikh Aid Mission to assess the needs on the ground so the humanitarian mission can begin to deliver essential supplies, including food, water, hygiene products and medical aid, to help victims in regions most impacted by the disaster.
The Category 4 hurricane, one of the most powerful storms to hit the region, has caused widespread destruction, leaving millions without power and causing significant loss of life and property with over 200 dead and hundreds yet unaccounted for. It has been the deadliest storm since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the coast along Louisiana in 2005.
On account of the massive destruction and impending threats, UNITED SIKHS leadership immediately reached out to assess the damage, further coordinating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Voluntary Agency Liaison to understand the magnitude of the disaster, in preparation for deployment of resources.
This week has also been vital for coordination efforts with UNITED SIKHS active participation in the Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), working with other voluntary organizations, faith-based groups, and government agencies to coordinate relief efforts, streamline the process and eliminate duplication of services.
We thank Gurdwara Sahib Charlotte for being gracious in collaborating to become the disaster relief center where supplies, and resources can be dropped off and collected. We thank the committee, and the local sangat for stepping up to answer the clarion call to assist, provide solace, and administer aid to those in need.
