UNITED SIKHS Joins National Coalition Calling for Impeachment of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem

Washington, D.C. — UNITED SIKHS today announced that it has joined a national coalition of interfaith leaders, business executives, veteran organizations, and civil rights advocates demanding the immediate impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for systemic violations of constitutional rights and federal law.

This call for impeachment is made only after sustained and well-documented harms, and after traditional oversight mechanisms have failed to prevent continued violations. When a Cabinet official repeatedly exceeds statutory authority, disregards court rulings, and undermines fundamental constitutional protections, impeachment becomes the Constitution’s final safeguard to protect the rule of law and affected communities.

Under Secretary Noem’s leadership, the Department of Homeland Security has taken actions that courts, lawmakers, and civil rights experts have found unlawful or constitutionally suspect.

Federal courts have ruled that Secretary Noem unlawfully terminated Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelan nationals, holding that she exceeded the authority granted by Congress and that the decision exposed hundreds of thousands of individuals to detention and deportation without lawful basis. Similarly, a federal judge has blocked her attempt to end Temporary Protected Status for more than 350,000 Haitian nationals, finding the action likely unlawful and raising concerns about discriminatory decision making.

Secretary Noem has overseen aggressive immigration enforcement practices that civil liberties organizations and members of Congress warn erode Fourth Amendment protections. National reporting and internal guidance reveal that federal agents have been permitted to conduct arrests without judicial warrants in circumstances long understood to require them, a departure from constitutional norms governing searches and seizures (Associated Press).

Members of Congress, including senior lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee, publicly criticized DHS enforcement practices under Secretary Noem for racial profiling and arbitrary detention of U.S. citizens and lawful residents, raising alarms about violations of constitutional and statutory limits on executive power.

In congressional testimony, Secretary Noem has also mischaracterized core constitutional principles, including habeas corpus, inaccurately describing it as an executive authority rather than a fundamental safeguard against unlawful detention. Constitutional scholars and lawmakers have warned that such misstatements reflect a troubling disregard for basic constitutional protections.

These actions have not occurred in isolation. They have been repeatedly challenged in federal courts, scrutinized in congressional hearings, and criticized by national civil rights organizations. Despite injunctions, rulings, and legislative oversight, the conduct has persisted, demonstrating that conventional accountability mechanisms have not been sufficient to halt ongoing harm.

Impeachment is a last resort precisely because it is reserved for moments when other remedies have failed. The Constitution provides impeachment as the mechanism to address executive officials who abuse the powers of their office or persistently violate the law. In this case, impeachment is necessary to reaffirm that no official, regardless of rank, is above constitutional and statutory limits.

“Accountability is not optional,” UNITED SIKHS said. “When constitutional rights are repeatedly violated and lawful oversight is ignored, Congress has a duty to act.”

Congress must act now. The integrity of constitutional governance and the protection of fundamental civil rights demand urgent accountability.
