UNITED SIKHS Mobilizes Urgent Flood Relief for Flash Flood Victims in Pakistan

Buner, Pakistan – August 18, 2025 – In response to the devastating flash floods that have struck multiple districts across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, UNITED SIKHS has swiftly mobilized emergency relief efforts to support affected communities in Swat and Buner districts.

Relief teams are currently on the ground in the villages of Batai, Pir Baba, Charghazai, Beshonai, and Gokand villages of Buner district, coordinating urgent assistance. Immediate aid includes cooked meals, clean drinking water, biscuits, fruits, juices, and medical support for the most vulnerable survivors.

According to official government reports, the Malakand Division has been the most severely affected, particularly Buner, Swat, Shangla, and Lower Dir districts. Other districts, including Charsadda, Swabi, Mansehra, Battagram, Tor Ghar, and surrounding areas, have also suffered extensive damage.

According to Jatindar Singh, local community leader in Buner, 10 out of the 100 Sikh households in Pir Baba have suffered severe damage to their homes. Tragically, nearly 80 shops representing the primary source of livelihood for the community, were swept away by the floodwaters.

The scale of destruction in Buner district is staggering. According to Deputy Commissioner Kashif Qayyum, the flash floods have claimed the lives of 401 people and left 671 others injured, many of whom are still awaiting medical attention in overwhelmed local facilities. The disaster has also decimated the region’s agricultural base, with over 4,000 livestock lost, further compounding food insecurity and economic instability.

Housing infrastructure has been severely impacted, with 2,300 homes completely destroyed and 413 more partially damaged, leaving thousands of families displaced and vulnerable. The educational system has not been spared either. Six government schools were washed away, disrupting learning for hundreds of children and threatening long- term community development.

These numbers reflect more than just statistics, they represent lives upended, futures jeopardized, and communities in urgent need of compassion and support. UNITED SIKHS is committed to being part of the solution, standing shoulder to shoulder with those affected to rebuild homes, restore livelihoods, and renew hope.

In response, UNITED SIKHS has launched the following initiatives:

  • 1. A dedicated recovery fund to support the rebuilding of small businesses and economic recovery
  • 2. A collaborative framework with local officials and community representatives to ensure equitable and sustained support
  • 3. Emergency relief operations, including food distribution, medical support and needs assessments, already underway in flood affected districts of Malakand Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

“We are committed to standing by our brothers and sisters in flood affected districts of Malakand Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, during this time of immense hardship,” said UNITED SIKHS Pakistan Director Hardyal Singh. “Our teams are on the ground, and we are working tirelessly to provide both immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation.”

As the floodwaters recede, the true scale of devastation in Batai, Pir Baba, Charghazai, Beshonai, and Gokand villages of Buner district, are becoming painfully clear. Families are left without shelter, income, or access to basic necessities. In this critical moment, urgent action is needed to:

  • 1. Deliver one week’s supply of food rations and Non Food Items( NFI) to families who have lost all sources of sustenance
  • 2. Provide financial support to help re-establish destroyed shops and restore livelihoods
  • 3. Coordinate relief efforts with local authorities and community leaders to ensure aid reaches those most in need

UNITED SIKHS is calling on its global network of donors, humanitarian partners, and volunteers to rally behind this mission. Additional support is urgently needed to expand food distribution, rebuild homes, and restore economic stability for the affected communities.
