UNITED SIKHS Serving Humanity Through Langar Seva in Manhattan
For many years now, UNITED SIKHS has been carrying out the beautiful tradition of selfless service in the heart of Manhattan, bringing hot and fresh meals to the homeless and those in need. This initiative, rooted in the Sikh principle of Seva (selfless service), is more than just food distribution—it is a commitment to uplifting communities and restoring dignity through compassion.
Led by Inderjeet Singh and a dedicated team of volunteers, the Langar Seva in New York City is a beacon of hope and support for the underserved. Normally held on the first Thursday of each month, this time we served meals twice on the request of city partners to meet the growing demand. Over 200 freshly prepared meals were distributed, ensuring that no individual was left hungry.
The success of each Langar Seva depends on the community’s collective efforts. Volunteer turnout remains strong, with 15 to 20 individuals stepping up to serve each time. At times we have 5 to 10 volunteers keeping the mission alive. Regardless of the turnout, the spirit of Seva remains unwavering, proving that even a handful of dedicated hearts can make a powerful impact.
Seva in Action: More Than Just Meals
The Langar Seva project is not only about feeding people but also about creating an inclusive space of kindness and support. It offers those experiencing hardship a moment of comfort, a warm meal prepared with love, and a reminder that they are not forgotten.
Looking ahead, UNITED SIKHS remains committed to expanding the reach of Langar Seva, working closely with city partners to address the growing food insecurity in New York. As the initiative continues to grow, more hands, resources, and partnerships will be needed to sustain the mission.
For those inspired to contribute to this noble cause—whether by volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness—UNITED SIKHS welcomes all who wish to serve humanity. To join our mission and learn more, visit www.unitedsikhs.org or contact us at +1-855-US-UMEED (+1-855-878-6333)
