UNITED SIKHS launches Hurricane Laura Relief
Our emergency relief teams are working on many fronts across the globe. One of the latest responses is in the Southeastern U.S. state of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.
Over the last two weeks the world has been witnessing the wreckage caused in Louisiana by Hurricane Laura, the fifth strongest hurricane to hit the continental U.S. Hurricane Laura has hit the record books as the strongest hurricane ever to hit the state of Louisiana since 1856. Thousands of families have become homeless in just a matter of seconds. Businesses, set up after years of hard work, became mere debris in this devastation. Hurricane Laura has immensely damaged the power grids, which will need complete restoration over the upcoming weeks which means people may have to live without power for another few weeks. Thousands of lives have been impacted by this and we need to come forward to help the vulnerable who need our utmost support.
UNITED SIKHS’ emergency response team has initiated the relief response with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Red Cross.
Our team has been working on the ground in Louisiana collecting information and conducting assessment of needs for the local communities impacted by Hurricane Laura. Tens of thousands remain without power and will continue to for weeks as a massive relief response is put in place to return things to normal.
Today, alongside the members of Gurdwara Shri Dashmesh Darbar Sahib, 1803 Merganser St, Lake Charles, LA 70615, thousands of pounds of debris were relocated to ensure the safety of all who visit. This was an important step as the Gurdwara has volunteered their assistance in establishing feeding and advocacy services to support those most in need during this challenging time.
In the coming days, volunteers and donations are needed to ensure the success of our mission in southern Louisiana.
The following supply are needed urgently:
1) Hygiene goods like napkins, kleenex, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, baby wipes, diapers, etc.
2) Cleaning materials like Clorox, mops, brooms, buckets, etc.
3) Emergency Relief materials like bandages, alcohol, etc.
Please help the distressed families in Louisiana who have lost what they once called ‘home’, by donating to the UNITED SIKHS Hurricane Laura relief Campaign.
