UNITED SIKHS sends its deepest condolences to the families of victims of the mass shooting in Indianapolis, Indiana. Eight people were killed after a 19-year-old gunman went on a shooting spree at a FedEx warehouse and then turned the weapon on himself. Five others were injured and have been hospitalised.
Authorities have not released any official information on the gunman’s motive.  We hope no stone will be left unturned in the investigation of this tragedy including any hate/bias motives.
The violence began at 11 pm local time on Friday, during the shift change at the FedEx warehouse — a time when the area was heavily trafficked with many employees arriving for or leaving after their shift.
“This is a shocking incident. Our prayers are with families of all the victims. We would like to advise families to be careful as many could be celebrating Baisakhi outdoors. We are in touch with federal agencies for the safety and security of people at these community events. We urge the administration to investigate all motives including hate and bias,” said Manvinder Singh, Director of Advocacy, UNITED SIKHS.
The Marion County Coroner’s released the names of the eight deceased victims as Amarjeet Kaur Johal, 66; Jaswinder Kaur, 64; Jaswinder Singh, 68 and Amarjit Sekhon, 48, Karlie Smith, 19; John Weisert, 74; Matthew R. Alexander, 32; and Samaria Blackwell, 19.

UNITED SIKHS spoke to Hardeep Singh Virdi, president of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar in Indianapolis, who confirmed that the victims were devotees of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar.
According to CNN news reports, this tragedy marks the 45th mass shooting in the US since the racist violence in Georgia on March 16, 2021 that targeted Asian-Americans.  That mass shooting also left eight people dead, including six women of Asian descent.
We urge everyone to stay actively engaged in pursuit of peace and justice in their communities as we collectively offer our thoughts and prayers for the victims of the latest tragedy.
