UNITED SIKHS Advocates for Fair Access to Uber Driving Opportunities

New York, NY | October 26, 2026

UNITED SIKHS has formally called on Uber Technologies, Inc. to review and reconsider its reported refusal to accept valid temporary driver’s licenses issued by the states of California and New York for workers seeking driver opportunities. In a letter sent to Uber’s legal and executive leadership, UNITED SIKHS raised concerns that qualified applicants with valid state-issued drivers licenses and federal employment authorization documents (EADs) are being denied employment opportunities despite meeting legal requirements.

Multiple applicants have reported that their applications for employment with Uber were rejected solely because they presented driver’s licenses that were temporary despite Uber’s ability to confirm through official channels their valid licensing statuses.

UNITED SIKHS first raised these concerns with Uber in March 2026 and now seeks clarification and review of the company’s practices.

California law expressly permits qualifying temporary driver’s licenses to be used for operating motor vehicles for a specified period, while New York similarly issues temporary licenses to qualified drivers pending receipt of permanent licenses. UNITED SIKHS argues that Uber has the ability to independently verify license validity through DMV records and other verification methods.

The organization further emphasized that many of the affected applicants possess valid Employment Authorization Documents issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), confirming their legal authorization to work in the United States. UNITED SIKHS contends that denying employment opportunities based solely on documentation the driver cannot obtain due to government agency limitations  unnecessarily restricts access to work for qualified applicants.

UNITED SIKHS remains committed to advocating for fair employment opportunities and equal treatment for all qualified workers.
