Thanks to UNITED SIKHS that Standard Public High School, Dhulka, Distt.—Amritsar, Pb., India, has become witness to its, ‘UNITED SIKHS – Oxford University TravelAid Project,’ with the arrival of Oxford University Scholars and UNITED SIKHS volunteers on the school campus first in August 2006 and then again in Aug 2007.

Standard Public High School, Dhulka is a privately managed rural area school which, with its very limited sources of income, is trying its best to provide a high level of education to the wards of lower and middle class people of the area. We feel highly privileged that the school has become a little partner in UNITED SIKHS’ noble cause of educating and thus uplifting intelligent and deserving students from poor families.

In Aug, 2006, the day, on which four scholars from Oxford University, Mr. David Whiteside, Miss Annie Mcdermott, Miss Miranda Jones, Miss Aiman Leung and two UNITED SIKHS volunteers, Mr. Inderjit Singh and Miss Ramanpreet Kaur, graced the school campus with their fragrant presence has become a very memorable day for the staff and students of Dhulka School. It was for the first time that the young kids of this rural area school would have the opportunity to interact with scholars from a foreign university. They were all highly excited and happy.

The Oxford scholars taught the Dhulka School kids two days a week for four weeks. Though their time at Dhulka School was not extensive, the volunteers’ sweet nature and winsome personalities won the hearts of the young kids. The volunteers taught by way of a very interesting, ludic method. They taught the students poems; they sang with them and even played many games with them. In a nutshell, we can say that the students really enjoyed their company and they would have liked them to come again.

In Aug, 2007 a team of four scholars from Oxford University, comprising of Miss Maria Patockzka, Miss Sophie Preuss, Miss Laura Watts and Miss Emily Corran assisted by Miss Kiran Kaur, UNITED SIKHS volunteer coordinator, from Malaysia taught the primary school children at Standard School. With the help of charts, maps, the blackboard, physical activities and a play method, the English scholars made the students understand, learn and grasp the basic ideas and things they wanted to teach them.

The students got an insight into different cultures of the world and their global perspective widened in this way. After school hours, the volunteers tutored the six STARAE scholars taught at the school. The Oxford scholars proved successful in carving a niche in the young hearts of the students.

We would like to pay our sincere thanks to all the Oxford Scholars and UNITED SIKHS volunteers for their highly valuable support and services rendered to the students of Dhulka School.
