Emergency Relief Efforts Underway Amidst Massive Floods in Pakistan
Nightmarish scenes are being witnessed in Pakistan as massive floods continue wreaking havoc and devastation in Pakistan.
At least 1000 people have died and thousands are injured as the devastating floods affect nearly 30 million people.
According to U.N. resident coordinator and humanitarian coordinator in Pakistan, Julien Harneis, the flooding and landslides brought widespread destruction across the country, creating its “biggest challenge” in decades.
UNITED SIKHS Pakistan team has responded swiftly and deployed teams and resources for emergency relief in the affected areas. Our teams are on the ground with supplies including cooked rice, biscuits, bread, mineral water, clothes, infant milk and more in rescue camps of Charsadda in Khyber Pankhtunkhwa province.
The floods have caused human and livestock casualties, damaged homes and public infrastructure. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports that over 218,000 houses have been destroyed and 452,000 are damaged. Nearly 2 million acres of crops and orchards have also been impacted.
Due to flooding nearly 800,000 livestock have been killed. Such a huge number of carcasses and stagnant water are causing skin infections, diarrhea and other diseases, causing an urgent need for medical aid to prevent and control an outbreak. Our team is setting up medical camps to assist the ailing.
The floods have destroyed infrastructure — over 3000 km of roads and 145 bridges have been damaged, which is also impeding the delivery of humanitarian aid.
“We have started the relief work in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Due to the massive scale of the floods, several areas still remain cut off as roads and bridges have been destroyed, and communication systems have collapsed. Our teams are making every effort to reach and serve difficult to access areas. And are gearing up to assist in Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh,” Herdyal Singh, UNITED SIKHS Pakistan Project Director said.
“Currently we are providing emergency relief directly to impacted families. After the immediate requirements of emergency relief including food, medicine and clothes, etc we are also going to work with authorities to help rehabilitate the affected people,” Gurvinder Singh, UNITED SIKHS Humanitarian Aid Director said.
Your timely help will enable us to serve thousands of families in immediate need.
