UNITED SIKHS’ Aid Continues in Louisiana Flooded Areas, Volunteers and Provisions Needed

Louisiana : Since Friday, August 12, 2016, when the rain came and began to flood southeast Louisiana and parts of Mississippi, hundreds of people have been seeking aid. Many have donated what they could. “There’s more we have to do and, with the support of volunteers and donations, we can help feed and clothe those in need,” states Gurvinder Singh, the SIKH AID Director at UNITED SIKHS, an international civil and human rights advocacy not-for-profit organization.

What is most needed now are volunteers, food, emergency aid and hygienic materials. “This area is impoverished and was hit really hard by the most destructive flooding in the USA since Hurricane Sandy” states Mr. Singh. “Despite the hardship, UNITED SIKHS and local volunteers are doing everything to help those affected by the floods.”

Rajendar Kaur Pannu, a woman who lives in the affected area, who in the midst of the chaos around her managed to be safe, shared her home with UNITED SIKHS volunteers and staff who cooked traditional Indian food to feed those in need. “This woman’s kindness, and the humanitarian compassion of volunteers like Satnaam Singh, in the midst of all this tragedy, makes the tasks of rebuilding easier and even possible. It is with their help that UNITED SIKHS, SIKH AID was able to set up a base camp at the Louisiana affected sites,” says Mr. Gurvinder Singh.

Hundreds of pounds of food and provisions have been bought thanks to the donations of supporters since UNITED SIKHS’ first report that help was desperately needed. Help us do more, please click ahere to donate.

In the midst of such tragedy we don’t forget who we are” states Mr. Satnaam Singh. “As Sikhs we have a 500-year tradition called ‘Langar’. Everyone helps cook and comes together. During Langar, everyone sits on the ground to eat. It is meant as a way to remind us that we are all equal. Sikh tradition has prepared us to handle crises like this.

UNITED SIKHS has had an overwhelmingly supportive response from the Sikh community and others. “It is our humble request that everyone will continue to come forward and volunteer or donate to complete the task of helping those impacted by the flood,” states Mr. Gurvinder Singh in a plea in news outlets and to UNITED SIKHS followers.
