UNITED SIKHS meets Canadian MP’s to advocate for international students facing deportation

Mississauga, June 21

UNITED SIKHS has taken proactive measures to address the concerns of international students affected by the recent educational consultant fraud. In a significant move, members of the UNITED SIKHS team reached out with Canadian Members of Parliament (MPs) and administrators to advocate for the fair treatment and protection of these students. Our team met Conservative Party Deputy Leader Tim Uppal and MP Jasraj Hallan. 

The meeting between representatives and Canadian MPs took place amidst the backdrop of protests by international students in Canada. The protests sparked after deportation notices to a number of students by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) following the revelation that numerous students had fallen victim to fraudulent activities perpetrated by unscrupulous educational consultants in India. These consultants, who misrepresented educational opportunities in Canada, exploited the aspirations of the students for personal gain. 

During the meeting, the UNITED SIKHS team highlighted the dire circumstances faced by these students, many of whom have invested their life savings and sacrificed their futures to pursue higher education in Canada. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, UNITED SIKHS sought a compassionate solution that safeguards the rights and well-being of the affected students.

Gurbir Singh, Director at UNITED SIKHS Canada emphasized, “It is imperative that we remember the victims in this situation are the international students who dreamt of a better future in Canada. We stand in their support, advocating for their rights and urging the government to demonstrate empathy and find a just resolution.”

We firmly believe that the affected international students should not be held responsible for the fraudulent actions of the educational consultants. Instead, they deserve support, empathy, and the opportunity to continue their career pursuits and permanent residence they applied for in Canada. 

UNITED SIKHS will continue to engage with Canadian authorities, community leaders, and international student organizations to seek a comprehensive solution that addresses the concerns of the affected students.
