UNITED SIKHS Organizes Seminar to Guide International Students

Brampton, September 15

Dealing with several aspects of studying in a foreign country, including residence, work permits, juggling with studies and work while coping with the new environment and culture can become overwhelming for international students. To provide international students in Canada the knowledge, guidance and expert-advice along with the required resources for hassle-free study and stay, UNITED SIKHS brought thought-leaders, agencies and stakeholders under one roof for a seminar, with the aim of equipping the students with the knowhow they need.

The experts during the seminar made the students aware of their legal rights and prerogatives, allowances and permissions, and mental health resources. Different agencies and organizations like Pace Law firm, Peel Regional Police, Alliance Immigration and PCHS under one roof for the seminar organized by UNITED SIKHS in association with Sheridan Sikh Students Association.

While explaining the mission, values, global impact, UNITED SIKHS team guided the students about the organization’s legal aid services and UMEED Helpline for counseling and mental health issues.

Angela Barrientos and Edward Pehgin from Pace Law guided the students landlord and tenant rights, the issues students commonly face, and shared insights from their decades of experience.

Alliance Immigration members Jaswinder Singh and Justin Sidhu provided students the allowances and prohibitions regarding study permits, work permits and other details.

Peel Regional Police officers Lovejit Bains acquainted the students with aspects related to community safety, cultural diversity and creating bridges with different communities and also with the police department.

PCHS representatives Harkiranpreet Sidhu and Harjoban Arraich talked about strategies for mental wellbeing and coping with stress, while pointing to the UMEED Helpline form UNITED SIKHS for assistance regarding mental health and counseling. 

After the seminar, the students said they received crucial guidance, support, tools and resources, and such seminars should be held regularly. The experts also expressed that they were happy to connect with students and committed their availability for more seminars.

Speaking about the seminar, UNITED SIKHS Canada National Director Sukhwinder Singh said, “Coping with different aspects of stay, security, accommodation, while juggling studies along with part-time work can be stressful for students, especially in a new environment. It is important for students to know that they don’t have to go it alone, and resources and help is available to them.”
