UNITED SIKHS relief team arrives in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sri Lanka: A team of relief workers from UNITED SIKHS arrived in Colombo to provide aid to communities affected by the December 25th tsunami tragedy. The team of aid workers from the United States, United Kingdom and India met with Jeewan Thiyagaraja, a representative from CHA (Consortium of Humanitarium Agencies) taking part in the tsunami tragedy relief efforts.
From Colombo the UNITED SIKHS relief workers toured many affected areas on the east coast of Sri Lanka starting from Colombo and traveling to Moratuwa, Kalutara, Beruwala, Bentota, Balapitiya, Kahawa, Dodanduwa and Galle.
According to the one of the team members, ‘Galle is one of the worst affected areas. Most houses have been shattered. Almost all towns bridges have been damaged some of which have been replaced by new bridges. Schools have been shattered and so have been the hospitals and the police stations’.
Communities on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka have been the worst hit by the tsunami tragedy. According to Mr. Thiyagaraja, ‘The most urgent need is for dry rations and tents for communities affected by the tragedy’.
A team of UNITED SIKHS relief workers is on their way to the coastal areas in the northeast devastated by the tsunami. UNITED SIKHS relief efforts will be focused on providing aid to individuals and families.
UNITED SIKHS relief teams will be working with other local and international aid groups in the affected areas to access emerging needs to supply in person and resource based help to affected individuals and families.
