UNITED SIKHS Statement Relating to the Florida Truck Driver Accident Case: Understanding Court Hearings, the Facts, Due Process, and the Need for Reporting in Context

As a civil rights and humanitarian organization, UNITED SIKHS stands firm in ensuring that individual lives, constitutional rights, and human dignity are never hindered, wasted, or used for personal, political, or sensational purposes. We believe that public confidence in the justice system depends upon accurate reporting, respect for due process, and a commitment to presenting facts in their proper context.
Recent local news reports have implied that the truck driver charged in the Florida Turnpike crash “failed to appear” or “missed” his court date this week. While factually noting that Mr. Singh was not physically present in the courtroom, those reports omit important procedural context and may leave the public with a misleading understanding of what occurred. Such misleading information damages public confidence in our judicial system and may hinder Mr. Singh’s opportunity for a fair trial.
At the time of the hearing, Mr. Singh was in the custody of the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office. Under established court procedures, his attorney appeared on his behalf and waived his physical presence for that hearing, with the court’s consent. This was lawful procedural action that eliminated the need for the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Department to transport Mr. Singh to a hearing on procedural questions with the judge lasting only minutes.
Instead, immediately following the hearing, his legal counsel met with Mr. Singh in person to discuss the events of the day and to continue providing legal representation and advice.
Understanding how the judicial process works is essential. In many circumstances, particularly for brief procedural hearings, attorneys may appear on behalf of their clients.
A person’s physical absence from the courtroom does not, by itself, indicate a refusal to participate in the legal process or a failure to comply with court procedures.
We respectfully call upon media organizations, public officials, and members of the public to prioritize completeness, accuracy, and fairness when discussing ongoing legal proceedings.
Omissions of critical context can be just as misleading as inaccurate statements, particularly when they shape public perception of an individual’s actions or legal rights.

ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਲਈ ਭਲਾਈ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ ਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਯੂਨਾਈਟਿਡ ਸਿੱਖਸ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਗਤ ਜੀਵਨ, ਸੰਵਿਧਾਨਿਕ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਠੇਸ ਨਾ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਜਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਿਤ ਨਿੱਜੀ, ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ, ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਸੰਵੇਦਨਸ਼ੀਲ ਮਾਮਲਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਉਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਲਈ ਨਾ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਹੀ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਿੰਗ ਜਨਤਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਪੱਕਿਆ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਇਮ ਰੱਖਦਿਆਂ ਨਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਨਿਯਮਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ, ਤੱਥਾ ,ਅੰਕੜਿਆ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਤਾ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇ।
ਫਲੋਰੀਡਾ ਟਰਨਪਾਈਕ ਹਾਦਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਟਰੱਕ ਡਰਾਈਵਰ ਇਸ ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਦੀ ਤਾਰੀਖ ‘ਤੇ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਇਹ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਸਥਾਨਿਕ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਖਬਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲੀ ਕਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਦੇ ਕਮਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਖਬਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਤੱਥ ਛੱਡਣੇ ਜਨਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਗੁੰਮਰਾਹਕੁੰਨ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੇਣਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਾਡੀ ਨਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦੀ ਨਿਰਪੱਖ ਜਾਂਚ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਦ ਕਿ ਸੁਣਵਾਈ ਦੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੇਂਟ ਲੂਸੀ ਸ਼ੈਰਿਫ਼ ਦੇ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਦੀ ਹਿਰਾਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਨ। ਅਦਾਲਤ ਦੀ ਸਹਿਮਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਛੋਟ ਮਿਲੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਦਾਲਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਦੀ ਤਹਿਤ ਹੀ ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਕੀਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।ਇਹ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਸੇਂਟ ਲੂਸੀ ਸ਼ੈਰਿਫ਼ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਸਹਿਮਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ।
ਸੁਣਵਾਈ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਕੀਲ ਨੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਚਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਮਸ਼ਵਰੇ ਲਈ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਲ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਇੱਥੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਕਿ ਨਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਥਿਤੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਕੀਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੁਵੱਕਿਲਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਦਾਲਤ ਦੇ ਕਮਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੇਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਜਾਂ ਨਾਂਹ ਕਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਅਦਾਲਤੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
