UNITED SIKHS Supports Defrauded International Students

Mississauga, June 12

Hundreds of international students from India are caught in the middle of a fake offer-letter scam in Canada. They are facing a likely deportation from the country after their documents for admission to colleges and universities were found to be forged. The students were duped by fraudulent education consultants in India.  When they applied for permanent residency, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) notified them that they were subject to deportation because of the forged documents. An unspecified number have been sent deportation notices. The students are holding an indefinite protest next to the CBSA office against the deportation orders. 

UNITED SIKHS along with Naujawan Support Network, International Sikh Student Association and other organizations have been present at the protest in support of the students.

We have been reaching out to concerned authorities and MP’s to stop the deportation. Our team is also raising the matter with the United Nations.

Thanks to the collective efforts and concern raised, the government has postponed the deportation of Lovepreet Singh from Mohali who was to be deported on June 13.

We have been seeking support for them because the students come spending thousands of dollars, often taking huge loans and using up lifetimes of savings. “The students have been duped. Instead of worsening their misery by deporting them, they should be treated as victims on humanitarian grounds,” said UNITED SIKHS Canada Director Gurbir Singh. “It is also a lesson for those coming to Canada that they must verify their documents with CBSA and Canadian College. The Indian government must also tighten the noose on the fraudster education consultants.”
