UNITED SIKHS: The Fight for Drivers’ Rights Continues
Litigation, advocacy, and coalition‑building remain at the forefront of efforts to restore justice in California’s CDL crisis.

UNITED SIKHS reaffirms its commitment to defending the rights of Sikh and immigrant commercial drivers in California, where mass cancellations of Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) have left hardworking families without income, disrupted supply chains, and jeopardized the state’s economy.
UNITED SIKHS’ Multi‑Pronged Response
To confront this crisis, UNITED SIKHS has deployed a comprehensive strategy that combines courtroom litigation, policy advocacy, coalition‑building, and direct community support. Each action builds upon prior public statements and filings, underscoring the organization’s determination to secure justice for affected drivers.
Beyond litigation and advocacy, UNITED SIKHS has expanded outreach to ensure drivers receive immediate assistance and guidance.
UMEED Helpdesk: A dedicated helpline offering real‑time support for drivers facing CDL cancellations, providing case intake, documentation guidance, and referrals to legal aid.
Know Your Rights Clinic at Fresno: UNITED SIKHS organized an informative and impactful Truckers Rights Workshop where drivers and their families received urgent guidance, in‑person advocacy support including practical tools to navigate CDL cancellation challenges.
UNITED SIKHS condemned California’s revocation of 17,000 immigrant CDLs as “government‑sanctioned discrimination.” Director Bhupinder Kaur stated: “You do not protect safety by targeting people for how they look, where they were born, or how they pray.” This public stance laid the foundation for subsequent legal and policy action, warning of devastating impacts on families, supply chains, and civil rights.
In March 2026,UNITED SIKHS filed a writ of mandate after a lawful permanent resident’s CDL was cancelled, reissued, and then revoked on the same day without warning. “This case highlights the arbitrary nature of the agencies’ actions,” said Regional Director Manvinder Singh. The writ seeks to restore fair process and prevent drivers from being criminalized for simply doing their jobs.(Read more)
While the courts remain a critical battleground, UNITED SIKHS also advanced systemic change through policy engagements. Following its demand letter, the California DMV agreed not to act on thousands of CDL cancellations slated for January 2026. The letter outlined seven legal reasons why the DMV’s actions were unlawful and harmful. “This is a positive move… but it’s not the end,” said Chief Legal Officer Wanda Sanchez Day, noting uncertainty about whether confiscated licenses would be returned. UNITED SIKHS continues to press for reform.
In April 2026, UNITED SIKHS partnered with U.S. law firms to investigate CDL denials for lawful permanent residents. Cases revealed DMV refusals to honor USCIS extension notices and SAVE system mismatches that left drivers in limbo for years. By collaborating with civil rights NGOs and legal partners, UNITED SIKHS is urging agencies to recognize valid immigration documentation and prevent discriminatory practices. (See more)
UNITED SIKHS issued an Important Notice to All CDL Drivers in California (March 2026),guiding drivers step‑by‑step on how to apply, respond to document refusals, request written notices, and demand SAVE checks. The notice emphasized: “You must create a clear record that shows you applied, brought required documents, and requested reinstatement.
