On May 18, 2021, President Biden signed an Executive Memorandum requiring the Department of Justice to submit a plan of action to increase access to justice and re-establishing the White House Legal Aid Interagency Roundtable (LAIR). The LAIR addresses how civil legal assistance could increase employment, family stability, housing access and retention, consumer protection and public safety.
“Access to free legal representation means the difference between housing and homelessness.  It can mean families have a chance to be united when one member is wrongfully facing deportation.  This assistance can help address discriminatory employment practices and help keep children in school when they face religious accommodation issues or are refused a free public education because of their disability, for example,” stated Wanda Sanchez Day, UNITED SIKHS, National Legal Director.  “It makes absolute sense because justice and fairness should not have a price tag and individuals and families should not have to face these extraordinary hardships alone,” states Manvinder Singh, UNITED SIKHS Director of Advocacy.  “UNITED SIKHS welcomes the opportunity to increase its civil legal services programs and to work with LAIR to accomplish the goals of President Biden’s Executive plan,” states Ms. Sanchez Day.
