How You’re Helping Save Lives of Civilians in Ukraine

What happened over 300 years ago still continues to inspire us in our missions around the world. In 1705 Mughal invaders attacked Anandpur Sahib, India. Bhai Ghanaiya ji, a Sikh serving alongside the army of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh ji is remembered fondly to this day for offering water to all injured and dying soldiers, even those from the enemy camp. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, pleased with Bhai Ghanaiya ji’s grasp of Sikh principles and teachings, also handed him medicine to treat all soldiers who were hurt, from either side of the battle.

Deriving our strength and inspiration from Bhai Ghanaiya ji’s legacy of providing humanitarian assistance in conflict zones, UNITED SIKHS has designed a tactical medicine program that greatly improves the delivery of humanitarian aid and chances of survival in hostile environments.

After 9 months of being on the ground in Ukraine offering humanitarian aid, we see a clear need for more in the area of how civilians deal with medical emergencies & casualties in such unprecedented numbers. Our teams are hosting emergency medical training (EMT) for people residing in Ukraine’s border regions so that they may better protect themselves in emergency situations.

The training includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Arranging the right medical equipment
  • Treatment for fractures and wounds
  • Evacuating the wounded
  • Clearing airways
  • Protection against hypothermia
  • Demonstration of blood transfusion

Our first train-the-trainer program was offered to 50 civilians. However, the need is immense. We have a vast terrain to cover. We need to act quickly in response to the growing threat to the lives of innocent individuals.

“War brings unique healthcare challenges. Access to even basic healthcare can be excessively difficult. Timely and appropriate care can mean the difference between life and death. Access to hospitals and proper emergency care can be extremely difficult in war zones.  This program by UNITED SIKHS attempts to fill this void and will help save lives.” – Dr. Ravinder Singh, California.
