Kashmir,India– UNITED SIKHS Aid team, headed by Komal JB Singh, started the second phase of relief kit distribution on October 23, 2014.Since the second phase, over 400 families have been assisted. The relief kit consisted of mattresses, quilts, thermals, shawls and sweaters. During winter, temperatures in Kashmir hit below freezing, leaving these materials vital for survival.
Some areas of Srinagar have been under water for weeks. With your support, the team reports being the first to reach Hanjiwara for relief kit distribution, which lies 30 km south of Srinagar, despite the supplies truck being stuck in mud for hours.
Volunteers went to the areas of Haft Chinar, Suthra Shahi, Shaheed Gunj Balgarden in Srinagar District and Hanjiwara Village in South Kashmir.
The locals assisted the relief team in identifying the neediest families. There were reports that the hard to reach areas were not approached by many and little assistance was made available to them.In the Suthra Shahi area, local resident Balbir Singh came forward in helping to identify the families which were the most destitute. Distribution was conducted at Amira Kadal Gurudwara .
