UNITED SIKHS Canada condemns the violent attack at Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton, where two individuals were injured during early‑morning prayers. A gurdwara is a sacred sanctuary, and violence within its walls is an assault on faith and community. While police have confirmed that a suspect is in custody and the injuries are not life‑threatening, the organization stresses that the investigation must fully consider whether hate, bias, or religious targeting played a role. Reports of possible desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are deeply troubling and
require immediate verification. cbc.ca UNITED SIKHS Canada is calling on officials to act decisively. The Edmonton Police Service must conduct a transparent investigation and maintain open communication with gurdwara leadership. Provincial authorities are urged to carry out immediate security assessments and increase patrols at Sikh places of worship. Federal and provincial governments need to guarantee swift access to security funding, while Public Safety Canada must engage directly with Sikh organizations to assess whether current resources adequately address the rising threats. Equally critical is ensuring victims and community members receive culturally appropriate trauma services, and that law‑enforcement agencies establish a coordinated process to document recent threats and violent incidents against Sikhs in Alberta. This attack is a stark reminder that places of worship must never be left vulnerable. UNITED SIKHS Canada demands immediate action from all levels of government to ensure that Sikh institutions are protected, justice is delivered, and no community is forced to live in fear of practicing its faith.
