A Gurdwara Lost, A Community Standing Strong

On the night of July 26, 2026, a fast-moving fire tore through Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar in Virginia, Adelaide. The devastating inferno has consumed the entire building with the Sikh community grieving the loss of 4 Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s saroops in the fire, despite the efforts of over 60 firefighters. This is a loss that has deeply shattered the Sikh community across Australia and beyond.
As the cause remains under investigation, a team of investigators will be arriving to conduct a more detailed fact-finding.
Director of UNITED SIKHS Australia Mandeep Singh is one of the members of an investigation team appointed by the Akal Takht Jathedar to investigate with the help of authorities, provide support to the committee members and present a report to the Akal Takht Jathedar on the findings of the investigation. Other organizations include Australian Sikh Council, Gurudwara Council of Victoria.
A meeting of the Sangat will be held tonight to determine how best to proceed with religious ceremonies, including the respectful cremation of the half-burned saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, carried out in the presence of the community.
The Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar was more than a place of worship. Everyday, it fed hundreds of people through langar, offering free meals to anyone in need. Its destruction is not only architectural but profoundly human, a disruption of service and sanctuary. Community leaders captured the emotional toll felt across Adelaide and beyond.
